White Treatment of Blacks in Notes of a Native Son Essay -- James Bald
The White Beginning To Black Paranoia Some people regard James Baldwin as one of the best essayists of all time because of his ability to enmesh argument within narrative. Baldwin aims to tell a story, yet every so often throughout ?Notes of a Native Son,? he takes a moment to analyze what has happened. As the essay ebbs and flows from narrative into argument, the reader hardly knows the tide has changed. During this change, Baldwin turns to analyzing what has just happened, allowing the reader to actively interpret his analysis as a central theme throughout the work. Throughout the essay, Baldwin?s main narrative dealt with how blacks are treated by white people. When analyzing this narrative, it can be seen that white minds caused black madness, because of how the blacks were treated. Baldwin spends a majority of ?Notes? telling about his father?s life. Baldwin?s father eventually died from an illness of the mind, which plagued him for the last years of his life. His father was the first of a generation of free men. He kept to himself most of the time, had very dark skin, and was a preacher. He always had good intentions, but somehow those intentions never turned out well. As a result of his life, he had a great paranoia, which kept him from getting close to his children, and fueled his angry temper. James Baldwin noticed this paranoia as a young child. Part of the essay talks of when Baldwin was a young boy. One of his teachers, who happened to be white, was interested in a play he wrote, and wanted to take him to see one at the theater. They went to the play and later when Baldwin?s father was laid off his job, this woman became more and more important to helping the family. Even th... ...Baldwin reflects saying, ?now that my father was irrecoverable, I wished that he had been beside me so that I could have searched his face for the answers which only the future would give me now? (84). Baldwin wishes his father was there so he could look into his own future, and see how to cure his bitter madness. In ?Notes,? the narrative of his father?s life, Baldwin realizes, may eventually become the continuation of his own life, unless he learns from what has happened to his father. This essay tells the story of the latter half of his father?s life, and the first half of his own. These two half-lives can be spliced together to represent an African American?s life anywhere during this time period. Works Cited Baldwin, James. ?Notes of a Native Son.? 1955. Comparative Essay â⬠Macbeth Essay
Both texts, William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Macbeth and Shakespeare retold: Macbeth directed by Mark Brozel contains parallel themes and subtle differences in concerning matters like purpose, context and language. Both texts thoroughly explore Macbeths unlawful rise to power and his inevitable downfall. With power he becomes corrupt, a bloodthirsty tyrant and a victim of his own success and the use of imagery, language and stagecraft in the play infuse to create malevolent and malicious image of Macbeth. With the ideas of manipulation and ambition, he becomes ruthless, and his vision is fogged with ambition. This idea of ambition ultimately determines the fate of the texts characters. The statement ââ¬Å"power is the catalyst for corruptionâ⬠is clearly suitable for Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Macbeth. In act one scene 3, Macbeth meets the three witches; from this moment in the play onwards, Macbeth has an insatiable lust for power. The supernatural element of the use of witches to expose the Macbeth and Banquoââ¬â¢s prophecies builds on the idea of darkness and supernatural both representing the imagery of evil. The witches reveal to Macbeth he will become ââ¬Å"thane of glamisâ⬠, ââ¬Å"thane of Cawdorâ⬠and the last shocks him the most ââ¬Å"all hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafterâ⬠. Banquo was also revealed a prophecy that he will be ââ¬Å"not so happy, yet much happierâ⬠and ââ¬Å"thou shalt get kings, though thou be noneâ⬠. Banquo continues to warn Macbeth ââ¬Å"oftentimes to win us to our harm, the instruments of darkness tell us truths.â⬠This demonstrating Banquoââ¬â¢s lack of ambition as he takes no more thought about the prophecies revealed. Although for Macbeth, develop an indecisive mind, conflicting against his conscience. Macbeth reveals ââ¬Å"I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambitionâ⬠revealing that he cannot spur himself into action, but his only motive for murdering the king is hisââ¬Ë vaulting ambitionââ¬â¢ to have the prophecy true. Macbethââ¬â¢s ambition fuels his thirst for power. Similarly in the Shakespeare Macbeth Retold, the exploration of supernatural themes is revealed through the three garbage collectors who reveal similar prophecyââ¬â¢s to Joe that the restaurant will have 3 michellen stars and that the restaurant will become his. The supernatural and imagery of evil are portrayed through the film through the use of low lighting and mysteriousà sound effects foreshadowing evil and mysterious elements. Like the play the garbage menââ¬â¢s prophecies ignite Joeââ¬â¢s ambition to take over the restaurant and have him recognized as head chef. Although Billy, resembling the character of Banquo, explains to Joe ââ¬Å"it doesnââ¬â¢t matter that no one knows itââ¬â¢s us, we no, thatââ¬â¢s all that mattersâ⬠this revealing billy to be a much more simple, honest and harmless character, who unlike Macbeth and his wife did not challenge his own fate, therefore did not corrupt himself. He did not allow other forces to interrupt his ambition s, leaving the characters of Billy and Banquo to determine their own fate. Therefore proving that the ambitions of these characters throughout both texts, has an effect of whether they become corrupt or not. Furthermore another theme thoroughly explored hand in hand with ambition is that of manipulation causing the possibility of corruption. Throughout the play, Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s manipulation is demonstrated through Shakespeareââ¬â¢s use of antithesis, where something such as Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s innocent baby is compared to a murderous deed. The use of antithesis highlights the extremities and persuades Macbeth into the foolish act of murdering the King. Although in the Shakespeare Retold, although Ella is seen manipulating Joe into the crime claiming, ââ¬Å"you do this and we win everythingâ⬠, her demise is clearly represented through the use of symbolism in the film. Ellaââ¬â¢s earlier acts of manipulation were fuelled by her ambition for Joe to run the restaurant. Although after the crime has been perpetrated, she begins a slow slide into madness. In various scenes she is seen to be vigorously scrubbing her hands clean. Symbolic of her regret as she tries to escape t he reality of her actions. Her sensitivity becomes a weakness, and she is unable to cope. Signaling her total inability to deal with the legacy of their crimes, and the film shows her jumping from the restaurant rooftop, proving her corruption. Another example of manipulation also comes from theme of the supernatural in the garbage collectors who assured Joe a sense of security proclaiming, ââ¬Å"Pigs will fly before anything happens to youâ⬠, eluding Joe to the belief that he was untouchable. His first signs of corruption are represented in the kitchen where he becomes angry and demonstrates qualities of insanity,à yelling at fellow chefs reminding them ââ¬Å"whose the head chef here?â⬠ââ¬Å"I run this kitchen, mine is the only voiceâ⬠. This demonstrating Joeââ¬â¢s new use of power. Similarly in the play the three witches return to Macbeth, with three apparitions. The first warning him of Macduff, the second, reassures his power, and the third explains he shall never be vanquished until Birham wood comes upon Dunsinane. The witches for a second time had manipulated Macbeth into believing he to be invincible and that no body can harm him. Thus causing Macbeth to view people merely as removable objects in his ultimate conquest for victory, as he continues to murder his best friend Banquo and Macduffââ¬â¢s family. This proving that Macbeth being crowned king, has caused him to become even more bloodthirsty and is able to dispose of people without consulting lady Macbeth, proving his corruption leading to his eventual death. In conclusion, throughout both texts, the characters ambitions ignite there crave for power. For the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, it is obvious by their actions that they became blinded by their ambition for power and authority, leaving them corrupt. Therefore proving power to be a catalyst for corruption.

Indians Immigrating To America Essays - Free Essays, Term Papers
Indians Immigrating To America Essays - Free Essays, Term Papers Indians Immigrating To America Their homeland has the second largest population in the world, yet in America they form one of our smallest minorities. Americans were influenced by their beliefs long before the first immigrants arrived, and an important interchange of ideas has continued to the present day. Although many came to America as early as the turn of the century, they were denied citizenship until a congressional act granted it in 1946. Now they are students and teachers in our universities; they are artists and writers, musicians and scientists. Their contributions to industry, commerce, and agriculture have been valuable to America and to the world. Who are these people? They are the East Indians in America. Asian Indians have supplied innumerable contributions to the culture and well being of the United States; the majority of these contributions are geared notably to engineering and the sciences. The reason for immigration in the period from 1830-1890 is quite clear. India was in a great shape. Howeve r when the British took over India, they depleted the country of all her wealth and gave her poor citizens no choice but to leave. The main reason why everybody wants to go to the United States is because if they would go somewhere else, like France or Japan although they would get higher wages, there is much greater chance of getting harassed, arrested or deported in those countries as opposed to the United States (Takai 32). Here in the United States land remained plentiful and cheap. Jobs were abundant and labor was scarce. The United States, in the nineteenth century, remained a strong magnet to immigrants, with offers of jobs and land for farms (Hess 12). The Jews came for religious freedom, Italians and Asians came for work, and the Russians came to escape persecution. America had jobs and religious freedom. Consequently, America was referred to in many countries as the Land of Opportunity. This is land is also often called the melting Pot of the World. This is because it is b elieved that people from all over the world come to the United States and loose their cultural identity and 'melt' into or assimilate into the American culture. However, nowadays, the above is an unfair statement to make. Nowadays with the growing Chinese restaurants, Indian grocery stores, and European languages is school, etc., one can say that individual cultures are trying hard to voice their distinction amongst the overall American culture. One can therefore refer to the United States as the Salad Bowl of the World where every culture has its own flavor, just like in a salad, where every vegetable has its own taste even though it has a common dressing, the American culture. Amongst the Chinese, Japanese, Europeans, etc. and other immigrants, the East Indians represented a big group of those people who wanted to be part of the American culture. The East Indians, who came to America, were mostly spread out in little groups up and down the West Coast (Pavri 56). Their story is an especially important part of the history of Asian Americans, for they were a new kind of immigrant. The large majorities of the first immigrants from India were Punjabis, from a region called the Punjab. Most of these immigrants were young men, between 16 and 35 years old (Daniels 33). Many of them were married; however, they did not bring their wives across the sea with them. Their family and community ties remained strong after they left home; they came to America in small groups of cousins and village neighbors, and these relationships formed a network of interconnections among them in the new country as they lived and worked together. They had many reasons for leaving their homeland. They were being repressed by the British rule and had no land to farm on. To make matters worse, famine devastated India from 1899 to 1902. Thus, large-scale immigration began in 1906, when six hundred Asians applied to enter the United States (Millis 32). These families became the basis for the new East Indian communities. They had come to the United States with high hopes, expecting to make their fortunes, but they discovered that life in America was unexpectedly challenging.

The development of love between Romeo and Juliet Essays
The development of love between Romeo and Juliet Essays The development of love between Romeo and Juliet Paper The development of love between Romeo and Juliet Paper The development of love between Romeo and Juliet is very rapid and sudden. It is definitely love at first sight, or in Romeos case, just an aftershock after the downfall of a previous love. Both lovers have both experienced what they thought was true love; Romeo was in love with Rosaline, and Juliet was thinking of marrying Paris. This love can be seen as false love as, the moment that they set eyes upon each other their previous loves were all broken and a new one formed. I feel that Romeos love for Rosaline was actually quite strong because he was in a state of utmost depression when she left him. We do not find out much about Juliets love for Paris apart from the fact that she would like to meet him at the Capulet ball. Romeo and Juliets loved can be split up into four stages. These four stages occur in acts one and two. The first time Romeo thinks of Juliet, is in a very abstract dream. In this dream, he does not directly thin of Juliet, but he thinks of a special person entering his life when he goes into the Capulet house, but this love will make him take his life. I think that this shows that their love is definitely made by fate. Romeo actually sees Juliet for the first time at the Capulet ball, and thinks that she is the most beautiful creature and that she is a that has ever walked upon the Earth: Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear, so shows a snowy dove trooping with crows when Romeo says this, he may be suggesting that all the other girls and woman at the party are like crows compared to the dove that is Juliet. This most probably includes Rosaline, as she is one of the girls at the party. This is stage one of the development of their love. This shows that he loves her as soon as he sets his sight on her, and he even forgets his melancholy mood made by his last love leaving him. Stage two is when he goes and talks to her, even though all the Capulets have acknowledged that he is of the Montague family. This portrays that his love is extremely strong, that he is willing to go against centuries of hatred between their family names just to talk to Juliet. The event that represents how strong their love is, takes place when they kiss after a few seconds of talking. Nowadays, kissing is not something that happens as soon as a man meets a woman, so it seems quite strange, however it may have been different in their day. I think that this is quite a significant stage of their love for each other as they have now forgotten about their preceding loves and are concentrating on each other. Stage three occurs when they talk about their love of each other at Juliets house. They also talk about how they would each change their names for each other just so that they could be together. Juliet says that Montague is only a name and no part of Romeo so it doesnt really matter anyway. Also, I think that the fact that when Juliet asks him how he got there Romeo says that the love that first prompt me to inquire: he lent me counsel, I lent him eyes This shows that Romeo is completely driven by his love for Juliet. However, he seems to have forgotten his dream about dying if this love continues. Finally, the fourth stage takes place when they agree to marry each other at nine oclock the next morning. This is the stage that surprised me the most, as they had only met for a few hours, had two conversations about how they loved each other, and decided to marry. In this scene Juliet is compared to the beautiful moon, which brightens the night and is complimented several times by Romeo. After a few conversations, as mentioned above, they get married. This either shows that their love is a rushed love, or that it is true love and that they know it is true love. All these stages show the extremely quick development of the love shared by Romeo and Juliet in acts one to two. It shows that they both forget whom they were meant to love or marry, and choose each other instead, in the space of two days. I feel that the development of their love only happened so quickly because fate told them to, and they both followed it. Also, I think it is because they thought each other to be the most beautiful thing that they had ever seen. Juliet obviously liked Romeo more than she like Paris, and Romeo like Juliet more than he like Rosaline.

Living Through the End of the World by Paul Wapner Essay
Living Through the End of the World by Paul Wapner - Essay Example 6-7) In his important text on the post-modern environmental movement entitled ââ¬Å"Living Through The End of The World,â⬠Paul Wapner engages the modern view of nature as something to be dominated and traces this trend to its apotheosis in ââ¬Å"the end of natureâ⬠. In this manner, he traces the evolution of Western thinking about nature from Descartes to the work of Bill McKibben, who argued that modernity had reached a level where human behavior became an actual threat to the balance of life on the planet. This trend can be seen in the innumerable species of plants and animals that have been forced into extinction or placed on the endangered list due to the increasing population and technological prowess associated with human growth and civilization. Wapner worries about the loss of ââ¬Å"wildness,â⬠that part of nature that has consistently be viewed as ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠and outside of humanityââ¬â¢s conscious will and control. Wapner builds this argument f rom Thoreau, who wrote, ââ¬Å"In wildness is the preservation of the world.â⬠(Wapner, 2010, p.4) Thus, the heart of his argument is that human civilization and technology have progressed to such a level of ubiquity in the land, sea, and sky that there is hardly any true ââ¬Å"wildnessâ⬠remaining. ... This is seen in the extension of roads, airplanes, ships, and other forms of transportation which replace the natural trails our ancestors walked in mythologies at one with nature. The difference between Native American and modern American civilization probably illustrates these changes most starkly, but the same effects are seen worldwide. Nuclear power and weapons threaten the destruction of all life in the environment, even the possibility of a nuclear winter that could be an extinction event for large numbers of species and plants. Because nuclear energy is widely considered the ââ¬Å"pinnacleâ⬠of modern civilization, in its destructive power and unleashing of energy by splitting the atom, it is also an example of modernism that can be most extremely contrasted in its destruction with the traditional way of living harmoniously with nature by sustaining it. Wapner elevates ââ¬Å"the feralâ⬠as an archetypal example of the wild and those parts of our planet not domesti cated my humans. (Wapner, 2010, p.41) Similarly, he contrasts spontaneity with the scheduled and regulated nature of modern society. In this manner, the potential loss of quality in human civilization can become an issue, as certain integral relationships with plants, animals, and natural forces have been lost to humans existing in almost a completely artificial and media-driven environment daily. Wapner seeks in the feral aspects of a primordial relationship which elude empirical control of human civilization, for these processes themselves would not be considered natural if they are part of human will or ego-centric lifestyles and able to be twisted to our self-serving desires. The return to wildness or the feral elements of nature also relates to enchantment

International business Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words
International business - Assignment Example This project covers all aspects of producing green cars. Starting with research, production of green cars and production of batteries the government wants to produce a network of battery charging stations throughout France. The government plans to provide 900 million Euros of the total investment announced in the form of state loans. By 2030 the green fuel car sector in France is projected to hold 27% of the market share and will be worth 15 billion Euros as per the ecology ministry projections (Boehm 2009). Thus, looking at these ambitious plans of the French government, France is the best country to collaborate with for hybrid car technology. China and France are completely opposite to each other as far as the cultural and institutional aspects are concerned. This difference is reflected in their management style also. Starting with the demographics, the population of China is more than 1.3 billion while that of France is around 63 million. Because of high population the Chinese government has made laws to restrict the growth and also generate a population which is hardworking and devoted. Thus, all people in China voluntarily seek for employment as unemployment is seen as a social stigma. In contrast to this, French people enjoy the social security provided by their government. Hence, they are more secure as far as unemployment benefits are concerned. This reflects in their way of working as they are not always driven by the need to keep their jobs. The basic difference between the two countries lies in their government set up. China is a socialist republic while France is a capitalist and democratic country. If we look at their religious and social setup, we can see that Chinese people are more religion oriented and also believe in taking care of old. Because of the vastness of population, there are many religions in China. The old generation of China is the responsibility of
